Chapter 1
Chapter 1
❧
The private pier groaned under Julian’s weight, the wood damp with the evening’s mist. Everything was perfect. The inheritance was settled, the rumors had died down, and the world believed Elara had simply slipped into the dark. He pulled the gold wedding band from his pocket, the metal catching the moonlight. With a smirk that didn't quite reach his hollow eyes, he flicked it toward the center of the lake.
"Goodbye, Elara," he whispered.
The ring didn't splash.
Instead, a hand—pale as bleached bone and shimmering with a sickly, translucent blue—shot from the surface. The fingers, tipped with broken, mud-stained nails, caught the ring in mid-air. Julian froze. His heart hammered a frantic rhythm against his ribs as the water began to churn.
A head rose next, draped in hair that looked like tangled black silk and rotting kelp. Elara climbed onto the pier with a wet, heavy thud. She didn't look like a ghost; she looked solid, a creature of cold meat and water-logged lungs. Every step she took toward him was accompanied by the rhythmic, sickening squelch of water in her shoes. Her dress, once a pale silk, was now a shroud of gray silt and algae.
Julian tried to scream, but his throat was as dry as the desert. He turned to bolt, but the lake rose to meet him. Tendrils of dark water snaked up through the gaps in the floorboards, wrapping around his ankles like icy shackles. He was rooted to the spot, trembling as the scent of stagnant depths and old heartache filled his senses.
Elara stopped inches from him. She didn't smell like death; she smelled like the bottom of the world. She reached out, her touch leaving a trail of freezing moisture on his cheek. Her eyes were two dark pools reflecting his own terrified face. In them, he saw it all—the moment of the push, the way the bubbles stopped rising, the cold silence of the mud.
"You said... you were gone," Julian gasped, his voice cracking. "I loved you."
Elara’s chest heaved, a wet, rattling sound echoing in the night. When she spoke, it wasn't a voice so much as the sound of a drowning gasp given form. "Then come see the world you gave me, Julian."
She didn't shove him. She didn't need to. She simply pressed her palm against the center of his chest.
The heat drained from Julian’s body in a violent rush. He felt a sudden, crushing weight in his lungs, as if the lake were pouring directly into his soul. The karma of a thousand gallons of black water pressed down on his shoulders. He slumped to his knees, gasping for air that felt as thick as syrup. He wasn't dying, but he would never feel dry again. He would spend the rest of his life shivering, feeling the phantom pressure of the depths, a living man in a drowned man’s skin.
As Julian collapsed into a heap of shivering misery, the blue tint faded from Elara’s skin. The heaviness left her limbs. The water that had filled her lungs for a year was finally exhaled in one long, warm breath. Her skin regained the flush of the living, and the rot on her dress fell away like dust.
She looked at the ring in her hand one last time before dropping it onto Julian’s trembling chest. She was no longer a creature of the lake; she was a woman reborn. Elara turned her back on the pier and the man who was now a prisoner of his own lungs. She walked toward the tree line, her footsteps light and dry on the grass, leaving the shadows behind as the first light of dawn began to break over the horizon.
