Chapter 3

The Cluttered Safe Haven

Julian’s apartment was exactly as he described it, yet to Clara, it felt like a palace. It was a cramped space situated above a closed-down laundromat. The walls were lined with overflowing bookshelves, a mismatched array of thrift store furniture populated the living area, and a string of warm fairy lights was draped haphazardly over a small window overlooking the alley.
It smelled like old paper, laundry detergent, and him.
Julian locked the deadbolt with a solid *click* that sent a wave of relief crashing through Clara. He immediately moved to a small closet, pulling out a thick, oversized college sweatshirt and a pair of clean sweatpants.
"Bathroom's through there," he said, handing her the clothes. "Get out of those wet things. I'll make some tea."
When Clara emerged ten minutes later, swallowed up by the soft, oversized fleece of his sweatshirt, the adrenaline that had been keeping her upright for the last eight hours abruptly vanished.
The reality of her situation hit her with the force of a freight train. She was hundreds of miles from the only home she had ever known, standing in a stranger's apartment, with no job, no real-world skills, and a family hunting her down.
Julian was standing in the tiny kitchenette, pouring hot water into two mugs. He turned around to hand her one, but stopped.
Clara was standing by the edge of the worn sofa, her shoulders shaking. She pressed the heels of her hands into her eyes, trying desperately to stop the flood, but she couldn't. A sob ripped through her throat.
"Hey," Julian murmured, setting the mugs down on the counter. He crossed the small room in two strides. "Hey, it's okay."
"It's not," she choked out, sinking down onto the cushions of the couch, curling her knees to her chest. "I don't know what I'm doing, Julian. I'm so innocent. I'm so stupid. I don't know how to ride a subway, I've never had a job, I don't even know how to balance a checkbook. I thought I was being brave by leaving, but I'm just a liability. I can't survive out here."
Julian sat down right beside her. He didn't offer empty platitudes. Instead, he reached out, gently pulling her hands away from her tear-streaked face.
"You're not stupid," Julian said fiercely, his voice vibrating with absolute certainty. "You survived tonight, didn't you? You got on that bus. You walked away from people who made you feel small. Do you have any idea how much strength that takes? Most people live their whole lives trapped because they're too scared to take the first step. You took it."
Clara looked up at him, her breath hitching. His face was mere inches from hers. The fairy lights cast a warm, golden glow across his features, highlighting the sincerity in his eyes.
"But I don't know what comes next," she whispered.
"Nobody does," Julian replied softly. "We just figure it out. One day at a time. And you don't have to figure it out alone."
The emotional vulnerability between them suddenly shifted, hardening into a thick, magnetic physical tension. Clara's gaze dropped briefly to his lips before fluttering back up to his eyes. Julian’s breath hitched. He reached up, his thumb gently brushing a stray, damp curl behind her ear. His touch was electric, sending a shiver down her spine that had nothing to do with the cold.
For a long, suspended moment, they simply looked at each other, hovering on the absolute precipice of a kiss. The air in the tiny apartment felt charged, heavy with the unspoken promise of something new.
But Julian slowly pulled back, giving her a soft, reassuring smile. "Get some sleep, Clara. You're safe here."
