Chapter 4

Washed Clean

When Clara opened her eyes, the world was different.
The harsh, panicked darkness of the previous night had been replaced by bright, brilliant morning sunlight streaming through the small window. The rain had stopped entirely, leaving the city streets below washed clean and gleaming in the daylight.
Clara sat up on the couch, pulling the thick quilt tighter around her shoulders. For the first time in her life, she woke up without a knot of anxiety twisting in her stomach. She felt remarkably, undeniably safe.
The smell of sizzling bacon and fresh coffee drifted from the kitchenette. Julian was standing at the small stove, using a spatula to flip eggs. He looked over his shoulder as she stirred, a warm, easy smile spreading across his face.
"Morning, runaway," he teased gently.
"Morning," Clara rasped, pushing her tangled hair out of her face.
She stood up and walked over to the small, circular dining table. Sitting next to her steaming mug of coffee was a local campus newspaper. It was opened to the classifieds section. Several ads had been circled in bright red ink: a part-time position at a campus bookstore, a filing clerk job at the library, and two fliers for cheap student room-shares.
Clara stared at the red ink, a lump forming in her throat. He hadn't just given her a place to sleep; he had given her a roadmap. He had believed her when she said she wanted to start over.
Julian stepped up beside her, setting a plate of food on the table. "The bookstore is right across the quad. The manager is a friend of mine. I texted her this morning; she said you can come in for an interview at noon if you want."
Clara looked up at him, her heart swelling with an emotion so large it threatened to burst out of her chest. The oppressive fear that had ruled her life was gone, replaced by a thrilling, terrifying, beautiful sense of freedom.
"Thank you," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "For everything."
Julian looked down at her, the protective attraction from the night before returning in full force, bright and undeniable in the morning light. "You don't have to thank me, Clara. You did the hard part."
He didn't pull away this time. Clara stepped into his space, rising onto her tiptoes, and closed the distance between them.
The kiss was sweet, tentative, and deeply hopeful. It tasted like coffee and new beginnings. Julian's hands found her waist, pulling her flush against him, grounding her in the present moment. As Clara kissed him back, the lingering shadows of her past finally dissolved. The city outside was massive, loud, and chaotic, but as she stood in the warmth of Julian's arms, Clara knew with absolute certainty that she wasn't facing it alone anymore.
