The Descent

The ride down the freight elevator was agonizingly slow. The polished brass and marble of the penthouse faded away, replaced by the grim, industrial reality of the syndicate’s underbelly. The only sound was the mechanical hum of the descent and the harsh, heavy breathing of the heir standing right behind him.
Dante kept his grip firmly twisted in the fabric of Jaxson's ruined shirt, the barrel of a heavy pistol pressing sharply against Jaxson's spine.
"Keep walking," Dante growled as the elevator doors scraped open.
They stepped out into the estate’s dungeon. It was a stark, windowless basement holding cell built purely for pain. The walls were thick, poured concrete, entirely soundproofed from the city above. A single, flickering fluorescent light illuminated a rusted steel chair bolted to the floor in the center of the room. The air was freezing, smelling of damp earth, bleach, and old copper.
Jaxson stumbled forward as Dante shoved him violently across the threshold. Jaxson caught his balance, turning around slowly to face his executioner. This was the end of the line. There was no backup team waiting in the wings. There was no cavalry. He was alone in a concrete box with a monster.
Dante kicked the heavy steel door shut behind them. The lock engaged with a loud, final clack.
Jaxson squared his shoulders, dropping the submissive posture he had held for six months. If he was going to die here, he was going to die on his feet, fighting like a man. He shifted his weight, preparing to rush the heir, hoping he could at least disarm Dante before the bullet hit him.
"You think I'm the rat, Dante?" Jaxson asked, his voice low and dangerous, stripped of the manufactured fear.
Dante didn’t answer. Instead, his eyes darted to the top corner of the room, fixing on the small, black dome of a security camera feeding live footage back to the patriarch’s security detail.
Without a word, Dante reached over to a metal work table, picked up a heavy steel wrench, and hurled it with terrifying speed and precision. The wrench smashed directly into the camera lens, shattering it into a shower of sparks and black plastic. The red recording light blinked out.
Jaxson froze, his tactical assessment of the room suddenly thrown into chaos.
