The Broken Camera

The sadistic smirk vanished from Dante's face so quickly it was as if he had taken off a physical mask. The arrogant, posturing bully was gone. In his place stood a man with exhausted, desperate eyes, his shoulders sagging beneath the weight of an invisible burden.
"Breathe, Jaxson," Dante said. His voice was no longer a mocking sneer; it was grounded, urgent, and remarkably human.
Jaxson didn't lower his fists. "What kind of game is this?"
Dante holstered his weapon. He reached into the inner pocket of his tailored suit and pulled out a small, worn leather wallet. He tossed it through the air. Jaxson caught it on reflex. He opened it, his eyes widening in total shock. It was his own FBI badge. The badge he had surrendered to his handler six months ago before going deep undercover.
Dante then tossed a set of heavy iron keys onto the floor at Jaxson's feet.
"It's not a game," Dante said, running a hand through his perfectly styled hair, ruining it. "I'm the one who called your handler. I’m the one who tipped them off about the shipments. I'm the rat."
Jaxson stared at him, his mind struggling to process the monumental shift in reality. "You? You're the heir to the entire empire. You terrorize your own men."
"I play the part I have to play to stay alive," Dante countered bitterly. "If my father thought for a second I was soft, he would have put a bullet in my head years ago. I act like a monster so he trusts me. I spilled wine on you upstairs so I could drag you down here without arousing suspicion before he executed you at the dinner table."
"Why?" Jaxson demanded, his grip tightening on the badge. "Why burn down your own kingdom? Why save me?"
Dante looked away, his gaze fixing on the blank concrete wall. "Because of my younger siblings," he said, his voice dropping to a raw whisper. "Leo is twelve. Sofia is ten. My father is already trying to groom them. He wants to drag them into this blood-soaked life, and I will die before I let him turn them into what I had to become."
Jaxson felt the air knock out of his lungs. He saw the genuine, terrified devotion in Dante’s eyes, a perfect mirror of his own internal drive. Dante wasn't a monster; he was an older brother, trapped in a nightmare, trying to shield his family from the dark.
"You have a sister, don't you?" Dante asked, looking back at Jaxson. "Maya. She's in college."
Jaxson’s blood ran cold again, but Dante held up his hands in a peaceful gesture. "I know because I read your encrypted file when I contacted the Bureau. I know why you take the abuse, Jaxson. I know why you swallow your pride. We are fighting for the exact same thing."
Jaxson looked down at the badge in his hand, then at the keys on the floor. The bitter enemy he had hated for months was the only ally he had in the world.
"My father's security detail will be down here in three minutes to check on the broken camera," Dante said, his posture straightening, the tactical edge returning to his voice. "I gave the feds everything they need to secure the indictments tonight. The raid is already mobilizing. But we have to fight our way out of this basement before the tactical teams breach the penthouse, or my father’s guards will slaughter us both."
Jaxson bent down, scooping up the keys. He slipped his badge into his pocket and looked at the crime lord's son with a newfound, profound respect. "How many men in the corridor?"
"Four," Dante said, drawing his weapon again and flipping it around, offering the grip to Jaxson. "Heavily armed. You take the gun. I'll take the wrench."
Jaxson took the pistol, feeling the familiar, grounding weight of the steel. The wine soaking his shirt suddenly felt like a badge of honor. "Let's go secure our families, brother."
