Chapter 3
The Twisted Bloodline
❧
The fragile truce held, but the medical reality of Genevieve’s condition required more than intuition. Clara needed hard data.
Through a sympathetic servant who frequently made supply runs into the modern city, Clara managed to smuggle a portable, battery-operated ultrasound machine into the manor, hidden beneath a pile of sterile linens.
On a rainy Thursday afternoon, while Julian was occupied with pack disputes in the drawing room, Clara locked the heavy oak doors of Genevieve’s bedchamber.
The young woman lay pale and exhausted against a mountain of lace pillows. "Julian will be furious if he catches you with that," Genevieve whispered nervously as Clara squeezed the cold blue gel onto her swollen abdomen.
"Julian isn't the one carrying the future of the pack," Clara muttered, powering on the device. "I need to check the amniotic fluid levels and the umbilical blood flow. Just lie still."
Clara placed the transducer against the skin, her eyes glued to the small, glowing screen. The gray static shifted, resolving into the familiar shapes of fetal development.
Clara frowned, adjusting the frequency. "Genevieve... did the pack healers tell you how many pups you were carrying?"
"A single heir," Genevieve replied, her brow furrowing. "Sired by Lord Alistair of the Northern territory. The arranged mate. Why?"
Clara’s heart skipped a beat. She moved the wand to the left quadrant. "Because there isn't one pup. There are twins."
Genevieve gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "Twins? But... Alistair and I only... we only lay together once before he returned North."
Clara froze. Twins in shifter biology were incredibly rare, and the fetal development on the screen was showing something deeply concerning. She engaged the Doppler function, analyzing the blood flow. She then pulled a small, sterilized needle from her pocket.
"I need to do a rapid cord blood draw," Clara said, her voice tight with a sudden, terrible suspicion. "Just a prick. I have a portable centrifuge and reagent kit in my bag. I need to run a genetic marker test."
"Is something wrong with them?" Genevieve panicked.
"No, the pups are physically viable," Clara assured her quickly, though her mind was racing. "I just need to confirm the chromosomal stability."
It took twenty agonizing minutes for the chemical reagent test to develop in Clara’s makeshift lab on the vanity table. When the liquid in the vial turned a stark, unmistakable shade of violet, Clara felt the blood drain entirely from her face.
She had drawn Julian’s blood a week prior for a baseline pack antigen test. The genetic markers in the vial were a perfect, identical match to Julian’s DNA.
But Julian wasn't the father. That was biologically and morally impossible within the strict codes of the pack. Identical DNA...
"Genevieve," Clara said slowly, turning back to the bed, her voice trembling. "Did Lord Alistair look exactly like your brother?"
Genevieve looked utterly confused. "What? No. Alistair is blond. But... Julian visited my chambers the night after Alistair left. He said he had come to bless the mating. It was dark, the candles were out. He... he claimed the Alpha right to ensure the bloodline took. I thought it was strange, but he is the Alpha."
Clara felt a wave of profound nausea wash over her. It hadn't been Julian. Julian, with his suffocating honor and desperate love for his sister, would never commit such an atrocity.
It was the twin.
Julian had mentioned him once in passing, a dark secret buried in the Sterling history. Silas. The identical twin brother who had gone mad with the violent, primal side of the wolf. Silas had been exiled, cast out of the manor a decade ago for attempting to slaughter their father.
Silas hadn't just been surviving in the city. He had been infiltrating the manor. He had used his identical face to bypass the magical wards, slipping into his sister's room under the guise of the Alpha to sire his own heirs, intending to corrupt the royal bloodline from the inside out.
The pups weren't Alistair's. They were a twisted, incestuous product of a psychopath's revenge.
Clara spun toward the heavy oak doors, desperately needing to find Julian. Before her hand could even touch the brass knob, the lock clicked with a heavy, metallic finality from the outside.
"Julian?" Clara called out, rattling the handle.
The door didn't open. Instead, a voice drifted through the thick wood. It sounded exactly like Julian’s smooth, cultured baritone, but it was dripping with a sick, twisted amusement.
"The Alpha is currently indisposed, Doctor," the voice mocked. "He's taking a rather long nap in the cellar. Do make sure my children are delivered safely. I’ll be in shortly to collect them."
