Chapter 4
The Dark Moment
❧
Panic, sharp and suffocating, seized the room.
Genevieve let out a terrified cry, clutching her abdomen. The stress of the revelation and the voice outside the door triggered an immediate, violent biological response. Genevieve gasped, her back arching off the pillows. A rush of clear fluid soaked the silk sheets. Her water had broken.
"No, no, no, not now," Clara muttered, her medical training violently overriding her terror.
She rushed back to the bed, tearing away the heavy blankets. The contractions were hitting back-to-back, massive waves of primal, shifter labor that the young woman's body was not prepared for.
Outside the door, the sounds of chaos erupted through the manor. The clash of steel, the guttural, terrifying snarls of wolves in mid-shift, and the shattering of priceless antiques. Silas had brought a rogue pack. They were taking the manor by force.
"Clara!" Genevieve screamed, her eyes glowing amber as the pain ripped through her. "The pups!"
Clara ripped her medical bag open, dumping the contents onto the floor. She had no electricity. She had no backup. She had no surgical theater. She had a few battery-operated monitors, a sterile delivery kit, and the flickering light of three gas lamps mounted on the velvet walls.
"Breathe, Gen," Clara commanded, stripping off her restrictive woolen overcoat, leaving her in a simple linen shift. She snapped on sterile gloves. "You are going to push. I don't care about the politics, I don't care about the rogues outside. You focus on my voice!"
The heavy oak door shuddered violently as something massive slammed against it from the hallway. Silas’s men were trying to batter it down.
"Let them in, Doctor!" Silas's voice laughed from the other side. "They are my heirs! The true Sterling bloodline!"
"Go to hell!" Clara screamed back, positioning herself at the foot of the bed.
"Push!" Clara ordered.
Genevieve threw her head back, a half-human, half-wolf scream tearing from her throat.
The door hinges groaned, the wood splintering inward. They had minutes, maybe less. Clara worked with frantic, desperate precision. The archaic, regency room became a bloody, primal battlefield.
"I see the head! One more push, Gen!"
With a final, agonizing shriek, the first pup was expelled into Clara’s waiting hands.
Clara caught the infant. It was tiny, slick with blood and amniotic fluid. But the relief was instantly shattered by a terrifying silence. The baby wasn't crying. It was entirely limp, its skin a horrifying shade of slate-blue.
"No," Clara breathed. The umbilical cord had been wrapped tightly around its neck, cutting off the oxygen supply during the rapid descent.
"Clara? Why isn't it crying?" Genevieve sobbed, falling back against the pillows, her strength completely depleted.
"I've got him, Gen. Keep breathing," Clara lied smoothly, though her heart was pounding a frantic rhythm against her sternum.
She moved to the vanity table, laying the unresponsive infant on a sterile towel. She had no infant resuscitator. She had no intubation tube small enough. She grabbed a bulb syringe, desperately clearing the fluid from the tiny airway. She placed two fingers over the infant’s microscopic chest and began CPR.
* One, two, three, breathe.* She bent down, covering the baby's nose and mouth with her own, breathing tiny, measured puffs of air into the collapsing lungs.
* One, two, three, breathe.* The heavy oak door to the bedchamber finally gave way with a deafening crash, splintering into heavy shards of wood.
Silas stepped into the room.
He was a terrifying mirror image of Julian. The same broad shoulders, the same sharp jawline, the same aristocratic features. But where Julian's eyes were a stormy, burdened gray, Silas’s were a bright, toxic yellow, vibrating with psychopathic glee. His velvet coat was soaked in blood, his hands terminating in massive, lethal wolf claws.
"Ah," Silas smiled, his eyes locking onto Clara at the vanity table. "The modern miracle worker. Hand over the pup, human."
Clara didn't stop. She ignored the monster stepping into the room. She kept her two fingers on the tiny sternum. *One, two, three, breathe.*
"I said," Silas snarled, crossing the room with terrifying speed, "give me my son!"
Silas reached out, his bloody claws inches from Clara’s throat.
Suddenly, a tiny, stuttering cough broke the silence. The infant in Clara’s hands arched its back, the slate-blue skin flushing a sudden, furious red. A loud, piercing, beautiful wail erupted from its tiny lungs.
Clara gasped, tears of pure relief springing to her eyes. She had done it.
Before Silas's claws could close around Clara’s neck, a massive, dark blur erupted through the shattered doorway.
