Chapter 5

The Misunderstood Contract

Three weeks later.
The line between the performance and reality had entirely dissolved for Roxy. She had stopped visiting her tiny apartment. She had stopped pulling away from his touch. The penthouse no longer felt like a gilded cage; it felt like a home. Julian was cleared by his doctors to begin working remotely, but he spent the majority of his time in the living room, a laptop balanced on his knees, watching Roxy sketch lyrics in her notebook with a soft, affectionate smile.
It was a Tuesday afternoon. Roxy was in the massive master bathroom, soaking in the marble tub, letting the hot water ease the lingering guilt in her muscles.
Julian was in his home office, searching for a specific set of quarterly reports. He opened the heavy, steel wall safe hidden behind a piece of modern art. He pulled out a stack of manila folders, his gray eyes scanning the labels.
His hand stopped on a thick, black folder. It didn't have a label.
Curiosity piqued, Julian opened it.
Inside was a legally binding document. The header read: *Non-Disclosure and Financial Arrangement Contract.*
Julian frowned, flipping to the first page. His eyes scanned the dense legalese.
* Party A (Julian Sterling) agrees to remit the sum of $50,000 to Party B (Roxanne Vance) upon completion of a six-month companionship term. Party B agrees to maintain absolute confidentiality regarding the transactional nature of the relationship. Romantic entanglement is strictly prohibited.*
Julian’s blood ran cold. The breath froze in his lungs.
He stared at the signatures at the bottom of the page. His own sharp, angular scrawl. And Roxy’s messy, artistic signature.
The amnesia in his brain hit a massive, contradictory roadblock. His subconscious had convinced him that Roxy was the love of his life, a woman he was planning to marry. But here, in black and white, was evidence that their relationship was a cold, calculated financial transaction.
His recovering brain, desperate to protect the fabricated reality it had built, aggressively sought a solution to the cognitive dissonance.
It couldn't be true. He would never buy the woman he loved. He would never force Roxy into a degrading, transactional contract.
Unless he hadn't.
Julian’s eyes narrowed, a dark, protective fury igniting in his chest. The entertainment industry was cutthroat. Sterling Records had massive rivals. Apex Media had been trying to poach his artists for years.
* They forced her into this,* Julian’s compromised mind rationalized, the paranoia and the fierce devotion twisting together into a terrifying conclusion. *Apex Media must have found out about our relationship. They blackmailed her. They forced her to sign this fabricated contract to leverage her against me. They threatened her band.*
Julian slammed the folder shut, his jaw clenching so tightly his teeth ached. He had been injured. He had been weak. And someone had used his vulnerability to trap the woman he loved in a degrading, humiliating lie just to hurt him.
The warm, doting partner vanished. The ruthless, calculating CEO roared back to life, fueled not by corporate greed, but by a terrifying, protective vengeance.
Julian picked up his phone, dialing his head of security and his lead corporate attorneys.
"I want everything you have on Apex Media," Julian commanded, his voice a lethal, icy whisper. "I want their financials. I want their dirty laundry. I'm going to burn their entire label to the ground."
Over the next forty-eight hours, the atmosphere in the penthouse shifted drastically. Julian was constantly on the phone, his voice sharp and commanding, pacing the living room like a caged tiger. He was excessively, obsessively protective of Roxy. He hired a private security detail to follow her to her band rehearsals. He refused to let her leave the penthouse without an escort.
"Julian, what is going on?" Roxy asked on Thursday evening, watching him stare intensely out the floor-to-ceiling windows, a glass of scotch in his hand. "You've been acting like we're under siege."
Julian turned to her. His eyes were dark, swirling with a protective intensity that made Roxy’s pulse race. He walked over, setting the glass down, and pulled her into his arms, burying his face in her hair.
"I'm fixing it, Rox," Julian whispered fiercely against her temple. "I know about the contract. I know what they made you do."
Roxy froze. Her entire body went rigid. The blood drained completely from her face.
* He knows about the contract.*
"You... you found it?" Roxy stammered, terror gripping her throat. The gig was up. The amnesia had broken. He knew she was a sugar baby.
"I found it in the safe," Julian murmured, his arms tightening around her, completely misinterpreting her terror as trauma. "You don't have to be afraid anymore, darling. I promise you. I am going to destroy the executives at Apex for blackmailing you. I am going to ruin them for forcing you into that degrading position just to get to me."
Roxy stared at his chest, her mind reeling in absolute, horrified disbelief.
He didn't remember. His amnesia had twisted the truth to protect the illusion. He thought she was a victim. He thought he was saving her.
Roxy opened her mouth to tell him the truth. To tell him there was no blackmail. That she was just a desperate girl who sold herself for studio time. But looking up into his eyes, seeing the absolute, unwavering love and desperate protection shining there, her cowardice won.
If she told him the truth, she would lose him. She couldn't lose him.
"Okay," Roxy whispered, burying her face against his chest, her heart breaking under the weight of her own lie. "Okay, Julian."
