Chapter 6
The Diamond Gala
❧
The Diamond Gala was the crown jewel of the city’s entertainment industry. Held in the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel, it was a glittering, oppressive sea of champagne, haute couture, and fake smiles.
Roxy stood beside Julian, wearing a stunning, backless crimson gown that Julian had ordered specifically for her. She felt like an imposter wrapped in silk.
Julian, back in his element, was a force of nature. He wore a razor-sharp tuxedo, his arm wrapped securely around Roxy’s waist, projecting an aura of absolute, untouchable power. He had spent the last week systematically dismantling Apex Media’s stock value through ruthless corporate maneuvers, a silent, bloody war waged entirely for her honor.
"Smile, darling," Julian murmured, pressing a kiss to her temple as the flash of a photographer’s camera went off. "You look breathtaking."
"I feel like everyone is staring at me," Roxy whispered, clutching her champagne flute like a shield.
"They are," Julian smiled coldly, his eyes sweeping the ballroom. "Because you're with me."
A waiter passed with a tray of hors d'oeuvres. Julian stepped away for a fraction of a second to grab two glasses of water.
In that tiny window of separation, the trap snapped shut.
"Well, well. If it isn't Sterling’s favorite little charity case."
Roxy turned. Standing behind her was Marcus Thorne, the CEO of Apex Media. Marcus was a slick, venomous man whose label had been bleeding millions over the past week due to Julian’s relentless corporate sabotage.
Roxy lifted her chin, channeling her rebel armor. "Back off, Marcus."
"Oh, I don't think so," Marcus sneered, taking a step closer, his eyes glittering with malice. "Julian has been tearing my company apart. He thinks I blackmailed you. He thinks I forced you into a fake contract to hurt him." Marcus let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "The great Julian Sterling, completely blinded by a concussion. It’s pathetic."
"Don't talk about him," Roxy hissed.
"Or what? You'll cut me off from your hourly rate?" Marcus smiled cruelly.
A heavy, terrifying hand suddenly clamped down on Marcus’s shoulder.
Julian had returned. The aura radiating off him was lethal. "Step away from my fiancée, Thorne, before I break your jaw in front of the press."
Marcus didn't flinch. He turned to Julian, a victorious, ugly smirk plastered across his face.
"Your fiancée?" Marcus laughed loudly, drawing the attention of the surrounding executives. "God, Sterling. The brain damage must be worse than the rumors said. Are you really that deluded?"
Julian stepped forward, his fists clenching. "I know what you did with the contract, Marcus. You're finished."
"I didn't do anything with the contract, Julian!" Marcus barked, dropping the polite facade entirely. "I didn't blackmail her! I didn't force her into anything! She's a sugar baby, Sterling! You bought her!"
The ballroom seemed to hold its collective breath.
Roxy’s heart stopped. "Julian, please—" she choked out, reaching for him.
Marcus wasn't finished. "You drafted the contract yourself six months ago, Julian! You needed arm candy for the shareholders' meeting, and she needed fifty grand to record a pathetic indie album! There is no grand conspiracy! She is a paid escort, and you are a fool who forgot he wrote the check!"
The words hung in the air, heavy and violent.
Julian froze. He looked at Marcus. Then, very slowly, he turned his head to look at Roxy.
Roxy was trembling violently, her eyes wide with absolute, naked terror. She didn't deny it. She couldn't. The guilt was written across every line of her pale face.
Inside Julian’s mind, a massive, violent psychological dam broke.
The shock of the revelation—the sheer, unadulterated humiliation of the truth—shattered the localized amnesia. The fabricated reality of the last five weeks violently collapsed, overwritten by the sudden, crushing return of his actual memories.
He remembered the boardroom. He remembered his lawyers drafting the non-disclosure agreement. He remembered looking at Roxy across a cold mahogany table and negotiating her price.
The warm, fiercely loving man vanished in an instant.
Julian’s posture straightened. The stormy gray eyes that had looked at Roxy with such desperate devotion suddenly turned to absolute, freezing ice. He looked at her not as a lover, but as a deceitful, manipulative acquisition.
"Julian?" Roxy whispered, her voice breaking.
Julian didn't say a word. He grabbed her arm in a vice-like grip and dragged her away from the crowd, pushing through the heavy double doors that led to the private, moonlit terrace overlooking the city.
