Chapter 6

The Cellar Battle

Harper’s car tore up the gravel driveway of the Sterling estate. The front door was wide open, the stained glass shattered.
She rushed into the foyer. The house was dead silent, but a heavy, coppery scent of blood hung in the air.
"Chloe!" Harper screamed. No answer.
She ran toward the back of the house, heading for the heavy iron door that led to the basement. It was ripped off its hinges. From the pitch-black depths below, she heard the terrifying sounds of a violent struggle—snarls, the crashing of wood, and the heavy thud of bodies slamming into concrete.
Gripping the crowbar with white-knuckled intensity, Harper descended the rickety wooden stairs into the dark.
The sub-basement was a cavernous, stone-walled chamber. In the dim light filtering through the floorboards above, she saw a nightmare. Four mangy, feral wolves had cornered two wolves against the far wall. One was a smaller, sleek gray wolf—Chloe. The other was the massive black Alpha. Silas.
Silas was bleeding heavily from a gash on his flank, standing protectively over his sister, viciously fighting off the attackers. But they were outnumbered. And standing in the rear, emerging from a collapsed section of the stone wall—the old smuggling tunnel—was the largest rogue of them all, the crescent moon brand stark on its shoulder. The rogue Alpha.
The rogue Alpha coiled its muscles, preparing to lunge at Silas's exposed throat.
Harper had to act. She looked frantically around the basement. Her architectural knowledge fired rapidly. Above the tunnel entrance hung a massive, ton-heavy iron grate, originally used to secure the coal shipments. It was held open by a rusted, Victorian-era counterweight pulley system bolted to the wall near the stairs.
"Hey!" Harper screamed at the top of her lungs.
Every wolf in the room froze, their heads snapping toward the staircase. Silas’s amber eyes widened in terror at the sight of her.
The rogue Alpha snarled, its yellow eyes locking onto Harper. It abandoned Silas and charged across the basement directly toward her.
"Harper, run!" Silas’s human voice tore from his wolf throat in a ragged, horrifying command.
Harper didn't run. She waited until the massive rogue Alpha crossed the threshold of the tunnel archway beneath the iron grate.
With all her strength, Harper swung the steel crowbar, smashing it violently into the rusted locking mechanism of the pulley system.
The gears shrieked, the metal snapped, and gravity took over.
The ton-heavy iron grate plummeted like a guillotine. It slammed into the stone floor with a deafening crash, trapping the rogue Alpha squarely beneath its immense weight. The beast howled in agony, pinned to the floor, instantly neutralized.
Seeing their leader fall, the remaining rogue wolves panicked. Their morale broke, and they scrambled back through the tunnel entrance, fleeing into the night.
Silence descended upon the dusty, blood-splattered basement, broken only by the ragged breathing of the wolves.
