Claiming

Harper stood on the stairs, her hands shaking so badly she dropped the crowbar. It clattered loudly against the wood.
The massive black wolf slowly limped toward the staircase. As he approached, his form shuddered, bones snapping and reforming until Silas knelt at the bottom of the stairs in his human form, wearing only a pair of shredded denim jeans. His chest was heaving, covered in blood and sweat.
He looked up at her, his amber eyes wide with disbelief.
"You came back," Silas whispered, his voice cracking.
Harper hurried down the remaining stairs, dropping to her knees on the dirty concrete in front of him. She reached out, her hands hovering over the bleeding gash on his side. "Of course I came back. You absolute idiot, why didn't you answer your phone?"
Before she could inspect the wound, Silas reached out and pulled her fiercely against his chest. He buried his face in her neck, inhaling her scent deeply. He was trembling. The massive, intimidating Alpha was holding onto her as if she were the only thing anchoring him to the earth.
"I told you to leave," he murmured against her skin, his voice thick with emotion. "I sent you away to keep you safe, and you came back and walked into a warzone."
"I told you I'm not afraid of you," Harper said fiercely, wrapping her arms around his broad, hot shoulders. "And I'm not a fragile little civilian. I'm the architect who just saved your furry behind."
Silas pulled back slightly, his hands cupping her face. The coldness that had been in his eyes days ago was entirely gone, replaced by a burning, desperate devotion.
"I was terrified," he confessed, the truth spilling out of him. "I've spent my whole life protecting this pack. Protecting Chloe. But when I saw that rogue looking at you in the woods... I felt a fear I didn't know existed. You are my mate, Harper. The instinct to keep you safe overrode everything else. I'm so sorry I pushed you away."
Harper’s breath hitched. *Mate.* The word resonated deep within her chest, filling the hollow ache that had resided there her entire life.
"Don't ever do it again," she whispered, leaning her forehead against his. "I don't care about the fangs, or the urban legends, or the danger. I have spent my whole life looking for a home, Silas. Don't you dare throw me out of it again."
Silas let out a breath that sounded like a laugh, his thumbs wiping the dust from her cheeks. "Never. You belong here. You belong to me. To the pack."
He leaned in and kissed her. It wasn't a hesitant, gentle kiss. It was fiery, possessive, and deeply absolute. The heat radiating from his body soaked into her bones, melting away years of cold isolation. Harper kissed him back with equal desperation, her hands tangling in his dark hair.
A soft, polite throat-clearing interrupted them.
They broke apart to see Chloe, leaning against the wall in her human form, tossing a blanket toward her brother. She had a bloody lip, but a wide, genuine smile was plastered across her face.
"Not to ruin the moment," Chloe grinned, "but the city inspector is coming next week, and we still have a foyer to paint. Assuming the Alpha hasn't fired our contractor again."
Silas looked down at Harper, his amber eyes warm and glowing. "She's not going anywhere."
**Epilogue: Pack**
Six months later, the fog still rolled off the Willamette River, but the Sterling House was no longer a ghost story.
The Victorian mansion had been meticulously restored to its former glory. The mahogany gleamed with polish, the stained glass cast warm, colorful light across the parquet floors, and the heavy slate roof was secure against the winter rain.
Harper sat on the floor of the parlor, laughing as Chloe tried to untangle a string of fairy lights for the upcoming holiday party. The fire crackled in the restored marble hearth, casting a golden glow over the room.
The front door opened, letting in a gust of cold wind. Silas stepped inside, stomping the snow off his boots. He wore a thick coat, his cheeks flushed from the cold, but as soon as his amber eyes found Harper, the familiar, intense heat rushed back into his gaze.
He walked over to where she sat on the floor, ignoring Chloe’s teasing remarks. He dropped heavily onto the rug beside Harper, pulling her into his lap. He pressed a warm, lingering kiss to the side of her neck, right over the spot where a delicate, crescent-shaped claiming bite now marked her skin.
"Is the perimeter secure, Alpha?" Harper teased, leaning back against his solid chest.
"Safe and sound," Silas rumbled, resting his chin on the top of her head, his large hands wrapping securely around her waist.
Harper looked around the beautiful, warm room, listening to the comfortable banter between the siblings. She felt the steady, powerful heartbeat of the man holding her. The urban legends outside the gates could whisper all they wanted. Harper knew the truth.
She wasn't a wanderer anymore. She had built her foundation, and she had finally found her pack.
