The Morning After

The sun rose over Ouroboros, but the city was changed.
The Grand Ledger was a smoking ruin. The streets were paved with gold coins that had rained down from the explosion. The "rot" on the poor had vanished, dissipated into the ether when the debt was settled.
Elara sat on the edge of a medical cot in the back of a rebel safehouse in the Undercity.
The curtain pulled back. Julian walked in.
He looked rough. A streak of his hair had turned stark white from the trauma of the energy beam, and he walked with a cane. But the grey rot was gone.
He stopped at the foot of her bed.
"So," he said, his voice raspy. "The Scales."
"So," she replied, a small smile playing on her lips. "The Ghost."
Julian shook his head, looking down at his boots. "I spent three years sleeping next to the most dangerous woman in the city, and I had no idea."
"To be fair, I spent three years sleeping next to the city’s biggest traitor."
Julian laughed. It was a genuine sound, rusty from disuse. He stepped closer and sat on the bed beside her. He reached out, tentatively, and took her hand. He traced the lines of her palm.
"Vane is dead," he said softly. "The Council has fled. The city is... chaotic."
"Chaos is good," Elara said, leaning her head on his shoulder. "Chaos means we can build something real."
"They want us to lead the interim council," Julian murmured, kissing the top of her head. "A witch and an Inquisitor. They think it’s poetic."
"I think it’s a headache," Elara sighed.
"We could run," Julian suggested. "Take the gold. Go to the coast."
Elara looked up at him. She saw the white streak in his hair, the scar she had saved him from. She saw the husband she had finally met.
"No running," she said. "I think I’m done hiding who I am. Besides..." She smirked, pulling him down for a kiss. "We have a lot of missed anniversaries to make up for."
Julian smiled against her lips. "I'll update my calendar."
Outside, the city of Ouroboros was noisy and messy and free. And for the first time, the balance was perfect.
