The Blood Curse

A sudden, agonizing spike of pain erupted in Lyra’s chest.
It wasn't a physical wound. It felt as though a frozen hook had been driven directly into her soul, twisting violently. Lyra let out a blood-curdling scream, her back arching in Julian’s arms.
"Lyra!" Julian shouted, the calm Warlock King suddenly frantic. He dropped to the floor, taking her with him, cradling her head. "What is it? Talk to me!"
Black, viscous veins began to crawl up Lyra’s neck, spreading from a central point directly over her heart. The pain was beyond human comprehension. It was a failsafe. A dormant, lethal blood-curse the Coven High Council had implanted in her soul years ago, designed to activate if she deviated from her mission or discovered the truth.
They were watching her magical signature. The moment her disguise dropped and her aura stabilized in Julian's presence without him dying, the Council triggered the kill switch.
"Curse," Lyra choked out, blood leaking from the corner of her mouth. Her vision was tunneling, fading to black. "Coven... failsafe. Julian... it's tearing me apart."
Julian’s eyes went wide with absolute, primal terror. The man who had conquered the magical underworld with a bored expression was suddenly reduced to a panicked, desperate beggar.
"No. No, no, no. I just got you back," Julian stammered, his hands glowing with dark, healing magic as he pressed them to her chest. "I won't allow this. Do you hear me, Lyra? I forbid you to die!"
He pushed immense amounts of magical energy into her body, trying to overwrite the curse. But the Coven's magic was ancient and deeply rooted in her own blood. It rejected his warlock fire, feeding on her life force faster. The black veins reached her jawline. Her breathing turned shallow, a horrific rattling sound in the quiet study.
Driven to absolute, unhinged madness by the thought of losing her, Julian made a fatal decision.
"If they want blood, I will drown them in it," Julian snarled, his face twisted in a mask of agonizing devotion.
He leaned down and pressed his mouth to the epicenter of the curse over her heart. He didn't just push magic; he began to draw it out. He used his own soul as a vacuum, forcibly pulling the lethal, parasitic Coven curse out of Lyra’s body and into his own.
"Julian, stop!" Lyra gasped, her mind clearing slightly as the pressure eased, only to be replaced by a new, horrifying realization. "It will kill you!"
"I don't care!" he roared, his eyes flashing a terrifying, toxic purple as the curse entered his veins. "A world without you is not a world I intend to exist in!"
The transfer was catastrophic. Julian’s immense, volatile magic clashed violently with the Coven’s dark curse. The recoil was explosive. The heavy obsidian desk shattered into a thousand pieces. The floor-to-ceiling windows blew outward, raining glass into the stormy night. The very foundations of the Obsidian Spire began to crack, the building groaning as its master’s magic spiraled out of control.
Julian collapsed beside her, convulsing. The black veins now marred his pale skin, rapidly creeping toward his throat. He was dying. He was sacrificing his god-like power, his empire, his life, just to buy her a few more years of breath.
Lyra lay paralyzed, watching the man she loved tear himself apart for her. The crushing weight of regret hit her again, harder than before. She had betrayed him three years ago, and he had responded by giving her everything. She was about to watch him die because of her actions once again.
* No,* Lyra thought, a fierce, protective fury igniting in her chest. *I refuse.*
