Blood to Blood

She would not let the Coven win. She would not lose him again.
Lyra dragged her agonizingly weak body across the shattered floor until she was kneeling beside Julian. He was fading fast, his abyssal eyes glazed over with pain, his breathing ragged.
"Live, little bird," he whispered, lifting a trembling hand to cup her cheek. Even now, dying, his only concern was her.
"Shut up, Julian," Lyra sobbed, grabbing his hand and pressing it to her chest. "We do this together, or we don't do it at all."
She pulled the silver blade from the rubble. Without hesitation, she slashed it across her own palm, then grabbed Julian’s hand and slashed his.
"Lyra, what are you doing?" Julian gasped, trying to pull away. "The curse... it will travel back to you."
"Not if I bind it," she said fiercely.
Lyra pressed her bleeding palm against his. She tapped into the absolute deepest, darkest reservoir of her blood-magic—the forbidden arts the Coven had outlawed centuries ago because they were too permanent, too consuming.
She didn't just chant; she poured her soul into the words. She wove their spilled blood together, creating a metaphysical bridge between their hearts. She initiated the Soul-Binding. It was a ritual that merged two magical cores into one, sharing power, sharing life, and sharing the burden of any curse.
"Blood to blood," Lyra chanted, her voice echoing with a dual, overlapping resonance as the magic took hold. "Bone to bone. Soul to soul. What kills you, kills me. What fuels you, fuels me."
The magic exploded from their joined hands. A blinding shockwave of crimson and abyssal black energy obliterated the remaining walls of the study, tearing the roof clean off the Spire. The storm above howled, a torrential downpour of rain washing over them as the binding locked into place.
The agonizing pain in Julian’s chest plateaued, then began to recede. The Coven's lethal curse, designed to kill one witch, was suddenly forced to metabolize against the combined, amplified might of a bonded Warlock King and a master blood-witch. The curse didn't vanish, but it was neutralized, diluted across their shared soul until it was nothing more than a faint, dark tattoo over both their hearts.
Lyra collapsed forward, gasping for air, her forehead resting against Julian’s chest. She could feel his heart beating a steady, powerful rhythm. She could feel his magic coursing through her own veins, a terrifying, exhilarating rush of dark power that made her feel invincible.
Slowly, Julian’s arms wrapped around her. The grip was tight, crushing, utterly possessive.
"You bound us," Julian whispered in awe, sitting up and pulling her into his lap amidst the ruins of his Sanctum. His dark eyes were wide, taking in the faint crimson tether that now linked their magical signatures. "You tied your soul to mine."
"You're stuck with me, Thorne," Lyra said, laughing breathlessly, tears mixing with the rain on her face. She reached up, running her fingers through his damp hair. She finally stopped fighting the darkness of his love and let herself fall completely into it. "I am never leaving you again."
A wicked, triumphant smile spread across Julian’s face. The Warlock King had finally captured his prize, and she had locked the cage herself. He leaned down, capturing her lips in a bruising, desperate kiss that tasted of blood, rain, and absolute devotion. It was a promise of violence to the rest of the world, and a vow of eternal protection to her.
When they finally parted, Julian looked out over the ruined walls of the Spire toward the distant horizon, where the Coven High Council sat oblivious to the monster they had just created.
"They tried to take you from me," Julian said softly, his voice echoing with their combined, terrifying power. "Twice."
Lyra stood up, pulling Julian with her. The magic thrumming beneath her skin was lethal and starving for retribution. She looked at her Warlock King, her partner, her bound soul.
"Then let's go show them," Lyra smiled, a dark, vindictive gleam in her eyes, "exactly what happens when you cross a blood-witch and her King."
Hand in hand, radiating a darkness that would soon set the magical world on fire, they stepped out of the ruins, deeply and unapologetically in love.
