The Confession and the Cure

Clara scrambled up and ran to the heavy glass double doors of the penthouse, engaging the manual deadbolts. She drew the motorized blinds, sealing the office off from the city below. She could not afford any interruptions.
Returning to Julian’s side, she tore open her canvas bag. She never went anywhere without her supplies—a habit born of paranoia and necessity. She pulled out a small mortar and pestle, vials of consecrated salt, dried rosemary, and a handful of jagged, unpolished amethyst stones.
Julian let out a low groan as another wave of the curse seized his muscles.
"I need to take your shirt off," Clara instructed, her voice trembling slightly despite her resolve. "The magic requires direct contact."
She didn't wait for his permission. Her fingers flew over the expensive pearl buttons of his dress shirt, pulling the fabric wide. His chest was heavily muscled but frighteningly tight, the black, ethereal veins of the curse branching out directly over his heart like a spiderweb.
Clara crushed the herbs and salt in her hands, mixing it with a few drops of water from a glass on his desk to create a gritty paste.
"What... what are you doing?" Julian slurred, his head rolling to the side. He watched her through half-lidded, fever-bright eyes. "Mud... you're rubbing mud on me."
"It's an extraction poultice," Clara whispered, straddling his hips to anchor herself and pressing her coated palms directly against the center of his chest, right over his racing heart.
The magic ignited instantly. A warm, golden light bled from Clara’s hands, pushing against the cold, oily blackness of the curse. Julian flinched, a sharp hiss escaping his teeth as the conflicting energies battled beneath his skin.
"Clara," Julian murmured. The delirium was stripping away his legendary self-control, unraveling the iron-clad emotional armor he had worn since the day his father married her mother. "You smell like rain. Always like rain."
"Focus on my voice, Julian. Stay with me," she chanted softly, closing her eyes and leaning her weight into her hands, willing her golden magic to hook into the roots of the parasite.
"I tried," he confessed, his voice a broken, raspy whisper that shattered the quiet of the office. "I tried so hard to keep you away."
Clara’s breath hitched. For years, Julian had been distant, sending her to boarding schools, keeping their interactions limited to stiff holiday dinners, acting as if her very presence was an annoyance.
"I know you don't want me around," Clara said, tears stinging the corners of her eyes as she pushed more magic into his chest. "You've made it perfectly clear. But I'm not letting you die."
"No," Julian choked out, his hand weakly lifting from the rug to blindly grasp at her waist. His long fingers dug into the fabric of her sweater. "Not because I didn't want you. Because I wanted you too much. You don't belong in my world, Clara. It's cutthroat. It's cruel. You're... you're too good. Too bright."
Clara’s eyes snapped open. She stared down at him, her heart skipping a beat.
"Every time I looked at you," Julian confessed, the fever burning away his lies, "I wanted to ruin everything. I wanted to tear down my father's rules. I kept you at a distance because if I let you get close... I knew I would never let you go. I was trying to protect you."
The revelation hit Clara like a physical blow. The rejection she had felt for a decade wasn't hatred; it was desperate, agonizing restraint. Her magic flared, responding to the sudden, overwhelming surge of love and relief in her chest.
But the curse sensed the shift. And it fought back.
