Chapter 3
The Purge
❧
The temperature in the penthouse plummeted with supernatural speed. Frost bloomed rapidly across the floor-to-ceiling windows, obscuring the city lights.
The parasitic magic, realizing it was being evicted, lashed out violently. A localized storm erupted within the sterile office. Unseen winds whipped through the room, sending stacks of corporate documents, sleek laptops, and glass paperweights flying through the air.
Clara screamed as the oily black energy surged upward from Julian’s chest, wrapping around her forearms like physical chains of ice. The curse was trying to leap to her, trying to stop her heart to save its own existence.
"Clara!" Julian yelled, his voice suddenly clearer, the encroaching cold momentarily shocking him out of his delirium.
"I've got it!" Clara lied, her teeth chattering as the dark magic began to crawl up her neck. Her golden light was flickering, threatening to go out. The sheer weight of the malicious spell was too much for one hedge witch to bear. She was going to fail. The darkness pressed heavily against her mind, whispering of cold graves and endless sleep.
Then, she felt it.
A surge of sheer, indomitable willpower.
Julian Sterling, a man of science, a man of ruthless logic, didn't ask questions. He didn't panic at the sight of the supernatural storm tearing his office apart. He saw the woman he loved dying, and his survival instincts took over.
He reached up, his large, warm hands wrapping tightly over Clara’s glowing, trembling ones. He intertwined their fingers, pressing her palms harder against his chest.
"I've got you," Julian ground out, his jaw clenched, his ice-blue eyes locking onto hers with a terrifying, grounding intensity. "I am right here. Push it out, Clara. Do it!"
His absolute belief in her, his physical strength anchoring her to the waking world, acted as a massive catalyst. Clara drew a deep, ragged breath, pulling on his strength, mixing his unyielding corporate willpower with her ancient magic.
"Out!" Clara commanded, her voice echoing with a dual resonance in the chaotic room.
A blinding flash of pure, brilliant gold erupted from their joined hands. The shockwave of magic shattered the frosted glass of the penthouse windows, sending a rain of crystalline shards cascading into the night air.
The black, oily chains of the curse violently snapped. The dark energy was ripped entirely from Julian’s veins, suspended in the air for a fraction of a second before the golden light incinerated it.
The curse dissolved into a shower of harmless, fine gray ash that drifted slowly down onto the white rug.
