Chapter 3
The Obsidian Gardens
❧
The Obsidian Gardens were a masterpiece of gothic landscaping, a sprawling courtyard enclosed by towering black stone walls. The paths were paved in smooth, dark slate, winding through dense hedges of black roses and arbors heavy with midnight-blooming jasmine. The air was cool, bathed in the silver light of a massive, full moon.
Sera walked beside Kaelen, her arm resting lightly on his. She wore a gown of deep emerald silk, a heavy velvet cloak draped over her shoulders to ward off the chill. She felt the eyes of the vampire guards stationed along the walls, but none dared to look at her for more than a fleeting second. They kept their heads bowed in deep reverence to their prince.
"It is beautiful," Sera admitted softly, looking at a fountain that cascaded with water so dark it looked like liquid onyx.
"It is entirely yours," Kaelen replied, his gaze never leaving her face. "If there is a flower you prefer, I will have the soil ripped up and replanted tomorrow. If you wish for a glass dome to keep out the chill, I will have the architects begin at dawn."
Sera swallowed hard. His wealth and power were staggering, but his willingness to bend reality itself to her whims was dizzying. It was a seductive, intoxicating kind of power she had never experienced. She was beginning to realize how dangerous it was to feel this safe.
As they rounded a corner near the eastern wall, a vampire guard stepped forward to open a wrought-iron gate. He was young, his eyes a bright, hungry crimson. As Sera passed, the wind shifted, blowing her hair back and exposing the pale column of her neck.
The guard inhaled sharply. It was a minute, instinctual reaction—the predator catching the scent of prey. His eyes flicked to her throat, his throat bobbing as he swallowed heavily.
It lasted less than a second. But Kaelen noticed.
The prince stopped walking. The air in the gardens instantly turned freezing, the atmospheric pressure dropping so rapidly that Sera’s ears popped.
"My Lord," the guard gasped, instantly dropping to his knees, his face stark white with terror. He realized his mistake the moment he made it. "Mercy. I swear I meant no disrespect."
Kaelen released Sera’s arm. He stepped forward, his movements casual, completely devoid of urgency. His face was a mask of terrifying, blank calm.
"You looked at her," Kaelen said, his voice a soft, lethal purr.
"It was an instinct, my Prince," the guard pleaded, trembling violently. "I averted my eyes! I swear it!"
"You looked at what is mine with hunger," Kaelen corrected smoothly.
He didn't draw a weapon. He simply reached down and placed a single, elegant hand on the top of the guard’s head. With a casual, almost bored flick of his wrist, there was a sickening, wet *crack*.
The guard’s body crumpled to the slate path, his neck snapped entirely in half. He was dead before he hit the ground.
Sera screamed, stumbling backward into the thorny hedge of black roses. The thorns tore at her silk gown, but she didn't feel them. She stared at the lifeless body on the path, horror rising like bile in her throat.
The other guards in the courtyard did not flinch. They remained perfectly still, their eyes fixed firmly on their boots.
Kaelen pulled a white silk handkerchief from his pocket and delicately wiped his fingers. He turned back to Sera, his crimson eyes entirely calm, the terrifying violence of the act leaving no trace on his aristocratic features.
"Are you injured?" Kaelen asked softly, stepping toward her with his hand extended.
"Stay away from me!" Sera shrieked, pressing herself deeper into the thorns. "You... you killed him! Without a thought!"
"He looked at you with impure intent," Kaelen stated, as if discussing the weather. "He dared to view you as prey. I told you, Serafina, I will burn the world to keep you safe. No one breathes your air without my permission. No one looks at you. You are sacred."
He reached out, ignoring her flinching, and gently extracted her from the thorns. His touch was impossibly light, utterly reverent, a horrific contrast to the brutal murder he had just committed.
Sera stared up at him, her body trembling uncontrollably. He was a monster. A ruthless, psychopathic killer. Yet, as his cool hands brushed a stray lock of hair from her cheek, the deepest, darkest part of her soul whispered a terrifying truth: *He killed for you. He will destroy anything that threatens you. You are completely, terrifyingly worshipped.*
The realization that a part of her was drawn to that absolute, violent devotion made her feel sicker than the sight of the dead guard.
"Come," Kaelen murmured, wrapping his arm securely around her waist. "The night air has upset you. Let us return to your chambers."
