Chapter 4

The Hidden Truth

Three days after the incident in the gardens, the Vampire Court was thrown into a sudden, chaotic frenzy. Alarms had sounded at the border of the territory. Kaelen had come to her room, his jaw tight, to inform her that he had to lead his generals to the northern pass to handle an 'incursion.'
"I will return by nightfall," he had promised, pressing a lingering kiss to the back of her hand. "The guards have strict orders. No one will enter this wing."
For the first time since her abduction, Sera found herself with the run of Kaelen's private quarters. The heavy oak door of her cage had been left unlocked, giving her access to his adjoining study and sitting room.
The study was a testament to his long, immortal life. Walls lined with ancient weaponry, maps of the continent, and massive oak desks covered in correspondence. Sera paced the room, rubbing her arms. The silence without Kaelen’s suffocating, magnetic presence was unnerving. She told herself she should be looking for a way out, looking for a weapon, but her scholarly instincts drew her toward his desk.
She sat in his heavy leather chair, her fingers trailing over the neat stacks of parchment. She opened a top drawer, looking for anything that might give her leverage. Maps of escape routes, schedules of the guard changes.
Instead, her hand brushed against a false bottom in the drawer.
Sera frowned. She wedged a letter opener into the crack and pried the thin wooden panel up. Beneath it lay a small stack of letters, bound in a black ribbon.
Her heart skipped a beat as she recognized the wax seal on the top letter. It was the crest of House Vance. It was her father’s seal.
Her hands trembled as she untied the ribbon and broke the seal. The parchment was dated three weeks before her abduction. As she read her father’s elegant, cursive script, the blood drained entirely from her face.
*...The debts are substantial, Lord Malakor, but we are prepared to offer our youngest daughter, Serafina, as collateral to clear the accounts. She is twenty-two, untouched, and possesses a sweet disposition. She will make a fine addition to your blood-thralls. We will arrange a carriage to transport her to your northern estate under the guise of a scholarly appointment by the next moon...*
Sera dropped the letter, her hands shaking violently.
Lord Malakor. She knew the name from the whispered rumors of the court. He was a rival vampire warlord, a sadomasochistic monster known for torturing his human blood-slaves to death for amusement.
Her father hadn't sent her away for an appointment. He had sold her. He had sold her to be tortured and drained, simply to clear his gambling debts. She was completely, utterly disposable to her own blood.
A choked sob escaped her lips. She blindly grabbed the next letter in the stack. It was a heavily encoded missive from Kaelen's spymaster.
*...My Prince. We have intercepted the Vance correspondence. Lord Malakor's forces are preparing to receive the girl. To intercept the carriage and take her into your custody will be viewed as a direct act of war against Malakor's territory. He will mobilize his army against the Court. We advise caution...*
Pinned beneath the spymaster's report was Kaelen's own handwritten note, scrawled in harsh, angry ink.
* Let them mobilize. Let Malakor bring his army. I will drown this continent in blood before I let him touch her.*
Sera collapsed back into the leather chair, clutching the letters to her chest. The walls of her reality violently rearranged themselves.
Kaelen had not randomly kidnapped her to be his toy. He had been watching her for a year, worshipping her from afar, content to let her live her human life. But the moment her family betrayed her, the moment she was in danger of being given to a monster who would break her, Kaelen had stepped out of the shadows.
He had knowingly incited a catastrophic vampire war just to pull her from the carriage. He had locked her in the Gilded Cage not to punish her, but to hide her from Malakor's assassins. He had taken her entirely against her will, yes, but he had done it to save her.
He was the only person in the entire world who had ever put her first.
The heavy, gothic doors of the study suddenly burst open.
Sera jumped, dropping the letters. Kaelen stood in the doorway. He was covered in dark soot and fresh blood, his suit torn at the shoulder. His crimson eyes were wild, frantic, scanning the room until they locked onto her.
"Serafina," he breathed, the relief in his voice palpable.
Before she could speak, the floor beneath them shuddered violently. A deafening explosion echoed through the stone walls of the estate, followed by the terrifying, echoing roar of a hundred screaming vampires.
"Malakor," Kaelen snarled, his fangs descending, his eyes turning to pitch black. "He bypassed the northern pass. They have breached the outer walls."
