Chapter 2
The Glamour Fades
❧
Over the next two weeks, the eighty-ninth floor became a gilded cage.
The silver tether never vanished. It was a constant, ethereal presence, invisible to everyone but the two of them. It passed through walls, floors, and elevator doors, stretching thin like spun glass when Elara went home to her apartment, pulling with a dull, phantom ache in her sternum until she returned to the office.
Julian’s behavior had become violently erratic. Professionally, he pushed her away, canceling their one-on-one briefings and communicating mostly through terse, typed emails. He surrounded himself with a physical coldness, an icy barrier designed to keep her at arm's length. Yet, the tether betrayed him. Whenever they were in the same room, Elara could feel the magical current thrumming with his instinctual, predatory need to pull her closer. When he thought she wasn't looking, his gaze would trace the glowing line between them, his expression a mix of awe and deep, simmering rage.
He was trying to protect her, she realized. But from what?
The answer came on a rainy Thursday afternoon. Julian was hosting a meeting in the glass-walled conference room with a client named Alistair Thorne, a supposedly reclusive European billionaire. Elara was tasked with bringing in the coffee service.
As she pushed the silver cart through the glass doors, the silver tether pulsed with a sudden, violent heat. Elara winced, her vision blurring. The corporate veneer of the room dissolved.
Through the terrifying lens of her newly awakened sight, Alistair Thorne was not a distinguished older gentleman in a tweed suit. He was a mass of writhing, iridescent scales and segmented limbs, crammed into the rough approximation of a human shape. Thick, putrid green smoke bled from his mouth as he spoke.
Elara froze, the porcelain cups rattling violently on their saucers. A soft gasp escaped her lips as Thorne’s head snapped toward her, his human eyes shifting into slit, reptilian gold. He smiled, and she saw rows of needle-thin teeth.
*"What a deliciously bright little bird you have, Vesper,"* Thorne hissed, though his human mouth did not move. The voice echoed directly in Elara’s mind, scraping against her sanity.
Before she could scream, Julian was there. He moved with a speed that defied human physics, interposing his body between Elara and the creature. The air pressure in the room plummeted. A wave of crushing, invisible gravity emanated from Julian, so heavy Elara dropped to her knees.
"Do not look at her," Julian commanded. His voice wasn't his own; it was layered with a resonant, demonic echo that rattled the glass walls. "Do not speak to her. Do not breathe in her direction."
Thorne shrank back, the reptilian illusion flickering in terror beneath Julian’s sheer, overwhelming power.
Julian turned his head slightly, his eyes burning with an unnatural, violet fire. "Leave the cart, Elara," he said softly, the gentle tone jarring against the monstrous energy rolling off his shoulders. "Go back to your desk. Do not look back."
Trembling, entirely overwhelmed by the horrific reality of the occult underworld operating in plain sight, Elara fled. She hid in the executive bathroom, clutching the silver thread at her chest, realizing that her boss was not merely dealing in cursed antiques. He was a monster, too. And she was tethered to him.
