Chapter 3
Blood and Wards
❧
The tension reached its breaking point three days later in the Subterranean Vault.
Deep beneath the sleek skyscraper lay a dusty, cavernous archive warded with centuries of heavy, oppressive magic. Elara hated it down here. The air felt thick, like breathing underwater, and her awakened clairvoyance constantly picked up the whispering echoes of the cursed objects lining the iron shelves.
Julian had mandated she accompany him for a high-stakes appraisal. He stood at a steel table, examining a rotting, leather-bound grimoire with a prospective buyer—a gaunt woman named Madame Kaelen, who practically vibrated with dark, necrotic energy.
Elara stood by the heavy iron door, trying to remain invisible. But the tether between her and Julian was pulsing brightly in the gloom, a beacon of pure, untainted soul-magic.
Madame Kaelen paused her negotiations. Her milky eyes drifted from the grimoire, following the path of the invisible thread that only those steeped in deep magic could sense. A wicked, realization dawned on her withered face.
"Well, well," Kaelen rasped, her voice like dry leaves. "The legendary Julian Vesper. The ruthless warlock of the Midwest. And you have a glaring, bleeding vulnerability standing right by the exit."
Julian’s head snapped up, his expression turning murderous. "Kaelen. Do not."
"A soul-tether," the witch cackled, her hands raising as black, noxious energy began to pool in her palms. "Sever the tether, shatter the warlock's mind."
Kaelen didn't aim for Julian. She aimed for Elara.
A spear of concentrated, decaying magic shot across the room. Elara threw her hands up, squeezing her eyes shut, waiting for the end.
It never came.
A sickening, wet sound echoed through the vault. Elara opened her eyes to find Julian standing directly in front of her. He had sliced his own palm open with a ritual dagger. Crimson blood dripped onto the stone floor, instantly igniting into a roaring wall of crimson fire that absorbed Kaelen’s attack.
Julian let out a feral, unearthly snarl. He thrust his bleeding hand forward. The blood-fire surged outward in a tidal wave, slamming into Kaelen and throwing her violently against the far wall, incapacitating her instantly.
But the exertion of such dark magic broke Julian’s control. He collapsed to one knee, gasping for air. The silver tether between them flared with a blinding, agonizing brilliance.
Elara cried out as the bond violently snapped into its final, locked position. It was no longer just a string; it was a conduit. A rush of emotions that were not her own flooded her mind—Julian’s ancient exhaustion, his terrifying power, his profound loneliness, and a protective instinct so fierce it bordered on madness.
* Elara.* His voice echoed directly inside her head, clear and resonant. She looked down at him. He was looking up at her, his glamorous human disguise slipping. His skin was paler, his features sharper, and shadows seemed to writhe beneath his tailored collar.
* I am a warlock bound by a bloodline curse,* Julian’s voice echoed in her mind, heavy with sorrow and surrender. *I am a monster to the world above. I tried to push you away. I tried to spare you. But you are my fated. You are mine to protect, and I cannot fight the magic any longer.*
Elara, trembling, reached out and placed her small, warm hand over the tether on her chest. The fear was still there, a cold knot in her stomach, but beneath it was something stronger. A connection that defied logic.
"Then protect me," she whispered aloud in the dusty dark. "And teach me how to survive this."
