Chapter 2

Sub-Zero Intimacy

Marcus’s capsule apartment was exactly what the name implied: a claustrophobic, metallic tube barely large enough for a bed, a small medical workbench, and a tiny sonic shower. It was meticulously clean, smelling of synthesized iodine, but right now, it was a freezer. Without the power-cell, the ambient temperature was plummeting to match the deadly chill outside.
He laid her on the narrow mattress. "I'm Marcus," he said, turning to his meager supply closet.
"Lin," she shivered, her teeth chattering so violently she could barely speak.
"Listen to me, Lin. Your clothes are soaked in slush and blood. If you keep them on, you will die of exposure. I’m going to take your jacket and shirt off, and then I’m wrapping you in mylar. Understand?"
Lin’s eyes were guarded, the survival instinct of a woman used to transactional brutality flaring up. But the deep, unyielding sincerity in Marcus’s dark eyes disarmed her. She gave a stiff, trembling nod.
Marcus worked quickly and respectfully. He stripped away the ruined outerwear, leaving her in a simple undershirt, and immediately wrapped a reflective emergency mylar blanket around her shaking frame.
But it wasn't enough. The micro-apartment was too cold, and her core temperature was too low. The air was a sharp, biting presence in the tiny room.
"I don't have a heat source," Marcus admitted, his own breath misting in the air. "I used the cell on the med-scanner."
Lin looked at the medical device sitting on the floor, then at the empty heating unit on the wall. Her silver neural-lace caught the dim emergency lighting. "You burned your heat... for me?"
"I took an oath. Even if it’s unlicensed," Marcus said, kicking off his heavy boots and shrugging out of his wet trench coat. "Move over."
Lin shifted against the wall. Marcus slid onto the narrow mattress beside her. The space was incredibly tight, forcing them flush against each other. Marcus pulled the mylar blanket over both of them.
"Body heat is the only way," he said quietly, wrapping his biological arm around her waist and pulling her back against his chest. His battered metal arm rested carefully near the edge of the bed so the cold alloy wouldn't touch her.
Lin tensed at the sudden, overwhelming physical proximity. She was a rogue data-architect; her life was lived in the sterile, untouchable expanse of the digital net. Touch was a vulnerability. But as Marcus’s broad, solid warmth began to seep into her freezing bones, the tension slowly melted away.
She turned her head slightly, looking over her shoulder at him. The contrast between them was striking—her pale skin and delicate silver cybernetics against his rich, dark skin and the scarred, utilitarian metal of his arm.
"Why did you do it?" Lin whispered into the quiet dark of the capsule. "Nobody in this city gives something for nothing. What do you want?"
Marcus sighed, resting his chin lightly near the crown of her head. "I don't want anything, Lin. I just saw someone dying."
"I stole an off-book ledger from Kuro-Tech," she confessed, the silence drawing the truth out of her. "It exposes a decade of corporate embezzlement and illegal evictions in this sector. They sent their best hunters after me. I expected to die in that slush."
"You aren't going to die," Marcus said, his voice a deep, resonant rumble against her back. "Not tonight."
For the first time in her life, Lin believed it. The hardened, cynical shell she wore to survive in the mega-city fractured under the weight of his unconditional care. She turned fully to face him under the blanket. The space was so small they were sharing breath. She reached up, her cold fingers gently tracing the scarred line where his biological shoulder met his cybernetic arm.
Marcus’s dark eyes softened. He didn't pull away. In the freezing, cramped capsule, a profound, quiet intimacy blossomed between them. It wasn't born of the neon-lit desperation of the city, but of a rare, genuine safety.
Lin leaned in, her forehead resting against his neck. Marcus held her closer, the rhythm of their breathing falling into perfect sync as the icy chill of the room was finally pushed back by their shared warmth.
