Chapter 3
The Block Gives Back
❧
The fragile peace shattered with a sound like a thunderclap.
The heavy, reinforced door of the capsule apartment buckled inward with a violent groan. The locking mechanism screamed, yielding to a kinetic breaching charge.
Marcus and Lin jolted upright, throwing off the mylar blanket.
Through the warped doorway, the harsh red lasers of three Kuro-Tech enforcers cut through the dim light. They were clad in heavy urban pacification armor, their visors glowing with a sinister, digitized green. They had tracked the blood trail.
"Target acquired," the lead enforcer droned mechanically. "Retrieve the drive. Eliminate the witnesses."
Marcus pushed Lin behind him, his heavy cyber-arm raising defensively, though he knew it was utterly useless against military-grade plasma rifles. They were cornered in a metal box. There was nowhere to run. His cynical voice whispered that this was the reward for compassion in a broken world.
But Marcus had forgotten about the city outside his door.
Down in the alley, Lao, the noodle vendor, had seen the corporate death squad bypass his stand. He had seen them march into the building of the man who had stitched up his granddaughter’s arm for free. The street kids huddled by the trash fire had seen them too.
And in Sector Four, the forgotten looked out for their own.
Just as the enforcer leveled his rifle at Marcus’s chest, the building’s power grid screamed.
A localized, brute-force counter-hack—executed by a dozen underground street kids using stolen tech—slammed into the enforcers' tactical network. The entire hallway plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness. The enforcers' green visors sparked violently and shorted out, emitting high-pitched whines as their optics crashed.
"Optics offline! I can't see!" the lead enforcer shouted, firing a blind, panicked shot that scorched the ceiling.
* Karma.*
Marcus didn't hesitate. In the pitch black of his own apartment, he knew exactly where he was. He lunged forward.
His heavy cybernetic arm, built for industrial lifting before he repurposed it for medicine, slammed into the lead enforcer’s chest plate. The kinetic force lifted the massive thug off his feet, throwing him backward into the narrow hallway.
Lin moved with the fluid, lethal grace of a street survivor. Slipping under the second enforcer’s blind, sweeping rifle butt, she drove her heel directly into the side of the man’s knee. The joint snapped under the pressure. As the enforcer collapsed, Marcus caught him by the tactical harness and hurled him into the wall.
The third enforcer tried to retreat, fumbling for a backup flashlight. A heavy glass bottle, thrown from the stairwell by someone in the neighborhood, shattered against his helmet. The enforcer stumbled, and Marcus finished it with a devastating right hook from his biological arm, dropping the man cold.
Silence descended heavily over the dark hallway, save for the groans of the incapacitated corporate thugs.
Marcus stood in his doorway, his chest heaving, his fists clenched. He looked down the hall. A few glowing optical implants peered out from the stairwell.
"You good, Doc?" a young voice echoed from the shadows.
Marcus let out a ragged breath, a genuine, rare smile breaking across his face. "I'm good, kid. Thanks."
