Chapter 5
The Blueprint and the Betrayal
❧
The romantic tension evaporated, replaced by a creeping, suffocating horror.
Elara and Kael stared at the monitor. The drive didn't contain financial records or corporate espionage. It contained a schematic.
It was a digital blueprint for a massive, localized neural-pulse weapon. The targeting parameters were laid out in stark, undeniable clarity: the lower levels of Neo-Kowloon. The slums.
"What is this?" Elara breathed, scrolling through the executive summaries.
"It's a purge," Kael growled, his jaw clenching. "The corporation wants to gentrify the lower sectors. Evicting millions of people costs too much time and resources. So, they plan to deploy a sub-sonic neural-pulse. It will induce massive, simultaneous cerebral hemorrhages in anyone not wearing corporate shielding. It’s a genocide."
Elara’s blood turned to ice. She looked at the deployment date.
"Kael... the deployment window. It's tied to the Long Night festival."
The Long Night was the city's annual mid-winter festival, happening in exactly two days. Millions of people from the slums would be gathered in the open streets, distracted by the neon parades and street vendors. It was the perfect cover for a mass casualty event. The corporation would blame it on a syndicate bio-terror attack.
"They're going to broadcast it from the Aegis Transmission Spire," Kael pointed to the routing codes on the screen. "It's the only tower tall enough to blanket the entire sector."
Elara continued to scroll, digging into the access logs of the drive. She needed to know who authored the program. But as she opened the final security file, her breath caught in her throat.
* ACCESS ATTEMPT LOGGED: USER JAX\_V.*
* COUNTERMEASURE DEPLOYED: LETHAL TERMINATION. TARGET ELIMINATED.*
* COUNTERMEASURE DEPLOYED: LETHAL TERMINATION. TARGET ELIMINATED.*
Elara stared at the screen, the words blurring as tears filled her eyes.
Jax didn't die in a random mugging. He hadn't been killed for his wallet. He had intercepted this drive six months ago. He had found the blueprint for the purge, and the Aegis Corporation had sent an assassination squad to silence him.
"He knew," Elara sobbed, a profound, agonizing grief ripping through her chest. "Jax knew what they were planning. He tried to stop them."
Kael stared at the log, his silver eye dimming. His best friend had been murdered by the suits in the sky. The guilt of surviving, the anger of not knowing, radiated from Kael in a palpable, violent wave. He slammed his cybernetic fist onto the metal desk, leaving a deep dent in the alloy.
"They killed him," Kael snarled, the sound feral.
Elara stood up, wiping the tears from her face. The insecurity that had defined her life, the fear of not being good enough, burned away in the fires of absolute, righteous fury. She looked at the man she loved, and the ghost of the brother she had lost.
"They aren't going to get away with it," Elara said, her voice steady and hard as steel. "We're going to the Spire. We're going to upload a kill-switch into the broadcast array. We're going to burn their weapon to the ground."
