Chapter 6
The Long Night
❧
The eve of the Long Night festival was a chaotic riot of color and sound. Down in the slums, millions of people flooded the streets, their faces illuminated by paper lanterns and towering holographic dragons. The air was thick with the smell of roasting meat and synthetic fireworks.
High above the celebration, piercing the smog layer like a chrome needle, stood the Aegis Transmission Spire. It was sleek, sterile, and heavily fortified.
Elara and Kael approached the Spire through the subterranean maintenance tunnels, bypassing the main security checkpoints. Kael was fully armed, his dark tactical gear bristling with kinetic weapons and EMP grenades. Elara carried nothing but a sleek, modified data-pad loaded with the most aggressive kill-switch virus she had ever coded.
"The primary server room is on the 80th floor," Kael communicated through their sub-vocal comms as they scaled a silent mag-lev elevator shaft. "Security will be tight. I'll clear the room. You get to the terminal and upload the virus."
"Copy that," Elara replied, her heart hammering.
They breached the 80th floor. The corridor was pristine, white, and deadly quiet. Kael took the point, moving with lethal precision. They encountered two corporate enforcers guarding the reinforced doors of the server room. Kael dispatched them silently, his cybernetic arm snapping a neck while his human hand drove a combat knife through the weak point of the other's armor.
He hacked the door keypad, and the heavy plasteel doors hissed open.
The server room was massive, bathed in the icy blue light of the cooling towers. In the center of the room sat the primary broadcast terminal.
"Go," Kael ordered, taking up a defensive position by the door.
Elara sprinted to the terminal. She jacked her data-pad into the mainframe. The sheer processing power of the Aegis Spire was overwhelming. She initiated the upload sequence.
* UPLOAD AT 10%...*
Suddenly, the ambient blue light of the server room violently shifted to a strobing, aggressive crimson. A deafening klaxon shrieked.
* WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED INTRUSION. DEPLOYING CONTAINMENT PROTOCOLS.*
From the ceiling above Kael, a hidden compartment dropped open. A massive, localized EMP generator hummed to life, discharging a blinding shockwave of electromagnetic energy directly onto Kael's position.
Kael let out an agonizing, choked scream as the EMP hit him. His cybernetic arm sparked violently, freezing mid-motion. His silver optic blew out, shattering the glass lens. The feedback surged into his biological nervous system, dropping him to the floor like a puppet with its strings cut. He lay there, paralyzed, bleeding dark synthetic fluid from his eye and arm.
"Kael!" Elara screamed, abandoning the terminal and rushing toward him.
"Stay... at the... terminal," Kael forced the words through clenched teeth, his body seizing uncontrollably.
Outside the heavy plasteel doors, the sound of heavy boots echoed in the corridor. A specialized corporate assault team had arrived. Sparks began to shower into the room as they fired a plasma-cutter at the heavy hinges of the door.
Elara ran back to the terminal.
* UPLOAD STALLED. ICE FIREWALL DETECTED.*
A massive, impenetrable wall of red code blocked the kill-switch virus. The Aegis Corporation had updated their security. The multi-phase variant method she had used in the clinic wasn't fast enough. The ICE was adapting, crushing her virus before it could penetrate the broadcast array.
"Come on, come on!" Elara cried, her fingers flying desperately across the keyboard. She tried to rewrite the code on the fly, but the panic was clouding her mind.
The plasma-cutter outside chewed through the first hinge. They had less than sixty seconds before the enforcers breached the room and slaughtered them both. The Long Night festival was beginning below. The purge was moments away.
The crushing weight of her inadequacy hit her like a physical blow. The dark moment eclipsed her.
Elara began to hyperventilate. The screen blurred through her tears. "I can't do it," she sobbed, the words tearing from her throat. "The ICE is too thick! I'm not fast enough! Jax... Jax should be here! He would know how to smash through this! I'm just a mechanic, Kael! I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, I've killed us both!"
The plasma-cutter severed the second hinge.
A heavy, trembling, blood-slicked hand clamped around Elara’s ankle.
She looked down. Kael had dragged himself across the floor, fighting through the paralyzing agony of the EMP. His human eye was locked onto hers, fierce and unyielding.
"Listen to me," Kael roared over the sound of the sirens and the sparks. "I don't need Jax! The city doesn't need Jax! I need *you*!"
Elara stared at him, her breath hitching.
"Jax hit walls until he broke his hands!" Kael shouted, gripping her ankle tightly, grounding her to the reality of the room. "You don't hit walls, Elara! You find the cracks! You see the whole board! You are better than he ever was! Now prove it!"
His absolute, unshakable belief in her pierced through the fog of her panic.
She wasn't a ghost. She wasn't her brother's shadow. She was Elara.
She turned back to the terminal. She stopped trying to write a single, massive battering-ram code to smash the ICE. She wiped the terminal clean and breathed in the sterile, ozone-heavy air.
* Take it apart.*
She launched a rapid, split-variant deployment. She coded three separate, conflicting viruses, tying them together with a fractured logic loop. She threw them at the ICE firewall simultaneously.
The corporate defense system panicked. It tried to adapt to the first virus, shifting its architecture, which exposed a vulnerability to the second. When it tried to block the second, the third virus slipped through the resulting crack.
She didn't break the wall. She tricked it into tearing itself apart.
* ACCESS GRANTED. UPLOAD RESUMING.*
* 80%... 90%... 100%.*
* KILL-SWITCH ENGAGED. BROADCAST ARRAY OFFLINE. PERMANENT HARDWARE FAILURE INITIATED.*
Deep within the bowels of the Spire, massive power transformers overloaded and detonated. The floor shook violently as the corporate pulse-weapon fried itself into a useless hunk of melted slag.
The final hinge on the door blew inward.
"Maintenance chute! Now!" Kael yelled, his cybernetics slowly rebooting, granting him a fraction of his mobility.
Elara hauled him to his feet. They threw themselves toward a heavy grated vent on the far wall just as the corporate enforcers breached the room, their weapons blazing. Elara kicked the grate open, and they tumbled into the dark, plunging down the spiraling escape chute into the depths of the city, leaving the ruined corporate weapon behind them.
