Chapter 2
Fairy Lights and Failing Shields
❧
Forty-five minutes later, the illusion of safety began to crack.
Even through the soundproof paneling, Leo could hear the wind. It sounded like a massive, wounded animal howling against the exterior walls. The temperature inside the library remained perfect, but Maya’s texts were growing shorter, her grammar slipping as her fingers grew numb.
* Maya: the cocoa is gone. storm is so loud. i can't feel my toes.*
Leo’s jaw tightened. He pulled up the Quantum Summoning app again. He couldn't stop the storm, but he could fight the cold. He punched in the coordinates for the school’s emergency supply closet and then linked it to Maya’s location.
He executed the command. *Summoning: Thermal foil blankets.*
The red warning text on his screen blinked faster.
* Warning: Repeated quantum displacement. Micro-fractures expanding in local containment shielding. Structural integrity: 88%.*
Leo ignored it. The library was a designated bunker rated for orbital debris. A few microscopic stress fractures from teleporting a blanket were meaningless.
* Maya: BLANKETS!! Three of them just fell out of thin air. You are my actual hero.*
* Leo: Wrap up tight. What else do you need?*
* Maya: a miracle? or maybe a fireplace.*
Leo couldn't summon a fireplace, but he could do the next best thing. He hacked the inventory of the drama department’s prop room. He summoned a heavy-duty, battery-powered space heater, followed closely by a long string of warm yellow fairy lights.
* Warning: Structural integrity: 72%. Shielding compromised.*
He dismissed the alert.
A few minutes later, Maya sent a short video clip. She had draped the silver thermal blankets over two tables to create a makeshift tent. Inside, the space heater glowed a fierce, angry orange, and the fairy lights were strung up along the metal chair legs, casting a soft, golden, incredibly cozy glow over the small space. Maya’s face appeared in the frame, her cheeks flushed, a weak but genuine smile on her lips.
* Maya: Look at this fort. It's practically a luxury hotel now. I'm okay, Leo. I'm actually warm.*
Leo leaned back against a beanbag, exhaling a shaky breath. He had done it. He had fixed it.
* Leo: When the rescue crews finally dig us out, I'm taking you to that real-meat burger place downtown. My treat.*
* Maya: It’s a date. I'm holding you to that, tech boy.*
For the next half hour, they texted back and forth. They talked about their favorite movies, complained about their physics teacher, and shared childhood stories. The howling wind outside faded into background noise. In the warmth of the library, reading her jokes on the glowing screen, Leo felt a profound, aching sense of peace. They were surviving together.
