Chapter 3
Mass Overload
❧
The peace shattered at 5:02 PM.
The library lights flickered, the amber glow dimming for a fraction of a second before returning. The datapad vibrated violently in Leo’s hands.
* Maya: LEO. The roof.*
* Leo: What? What's happening?*
* Maya: the metal is groaning. it's buckling inward. the ice is too heavy. the space heater just shorted out.*
Leo stood up, the datapad gripped so tightly his knuckles turned white.
* Maya: I'm scared. It’s so cold again. The roof is going to cave in.*
Panic, cold and sharp, flooded Leo’s veins. He couldn't send another heater. He couldn't send stronger blankets. If the roof collapsed, no amount of cozy supplies would save her. He had to get her out of there.
He opened the summoning app. The interface was sluggish, the device’s processor overheating.
* Leo: Hold on. I'm getting you out.*
* Maya: How??*
He didn't answer. He navigated to the app’s deepest settings, bypassing the hard-coded mass-limit safety protocols. The app was designed to move small, inanimate objects. Moving a human being was theoretical, incredibly dangerous, and required an immense amount of energy.
But he had no choice. She was going to die in that cafeteria.
He locked onto her exact biometric signature. He set the destination coordinates to the plush beanbag directly in front of him.
* Warning: Target mass exceeds safe displacement thresholds. Local shielding integrity critical (31%). Catastrophic failure imminent.*
"Shut up," Leo hissed at the screen, his thumb hovering over the execute button. The library could take it. It had to take it. He just needed her here, safe and warm beside him.
* Leo: Close your eyes. I'll see you in a second.*
He pressed execute.
The air in the library didn't just hum; it screamed. A blinding, violent violet light tore open the empty space above the beanbag. The room pressure dropped instantly, popping Leo’s ears. The quantum tear struggled to stabilize, expanding erratically as it tried to pull Maya’s mass across the campus.
On his screen, the red warning flashed one final time.
* Structural integrity: 0%. Containment failed.*
Because Leo had spent the last two hours repeatedly weakening the library’s shields to send her hot cocoa and fairy lights, the reinforced walls could no longer withstand the immense vacuum pressure of the unstable spatial tear.
The quantum tunnel didn't pull Maya in. It collapsed outward.
With a deafening, metallic shriek, the micro-fractures in the library’s exterior wall gave way. The reinforced steel and glass imploded, shattering inward like a bomb going off.
The sub-zero cryo-storm blasted into the room instantly. It was a solid wall of white, kinetic death. The cozy, seventy-two-degree air was obliterated in a microsecond, replaced by a devastating, unnatural cold that instantly froze the moisture in the air into falling snow.
Leo was thrown backward, the breath knocked from his lungs. When he tried to gasp for air, ice crystals instantly formed in his throat. The agonizing cold paralyzed his muscles. He collapsed against the frost-covered floor, his vision darkening at the edges.
The perfect sanctuary was gone. He had torn it open himself.
His numb fingers twitched, but he could no longer feel his hands. The datapad slipped from his grasp, sliding across the rapidly icing floor.
As Leo's eyes fluttered shut and the lethal cold took him, the datapad's screen glitched, illuminating the swirling snow. It vibrated one last time, displaying a final, unread text message.
* Maya: Did it work?*
