Chapter 3
The Midpoint Twist

Infiltrating the *Tengu* was eerily simple, confirming Kenjiro’s suspicion that he was an invited guest. He bypassed a malfunctioning airlock near the aft exhaust ports, his magnetic boots clanking softly against the sterile, obsidian-plated corridors of the dreadnought.
The interior of the ship was a manifestation of Ryu’s psyche: cold, hyper-ordered, and draped in the aesthetics of ancient violence. Holographic banners of war clans flickered under harsh, fluorescent lighting. The air was heavily recycled, devoid of any human scent.
Kenjiro moved like a shadow, his mono-blade retracted, his plasma caster primed. He encountered no patrols, no organic crew. Only the occasional maintenance drone that he easily bypassed. Ryu was clearing the stage.
He followed the HUD in his visor, tracing the origin of the distress signal to the deepest level of the ship—the high-security detention block.
Kenjiro approached a massive, reinforced blast door. He pressed his gauntlet against the override panel, injecting a decryption worm he had salvaged from his military days. The panel sparked, and the heavy doors slowly ground open with a hiss of pressurized air.
He stepped into a circular room illuminated by a single, harsh spotlight in the center.
"Aiko?" Kenjiro called out, his voice rough, echoing inside his helmet.
Beneath the spotlight stood a figure. But it wasn't a prisoner.
The figure slowly turned around. Kenjiro’s breath caught in his throat. His plasma caster wavered, lowering an inch.
It was Aiko. Her face—the high cheekbones, the fierce, beautiful eyes that had haunted his nightmares—was identical to the day she died. But the rest of her was a nightmare.
Her body was encased in sleek, white cybernetic plating, replacing everything below her neck. Her arms were extended, tipped with lethally sharp, vibrating mantis-blades. Neural-jacks were bolted directly into the base of her skull, connecting to glowing red tubes that pumped synthetic adrenaline into her system.
Her eyes, once warm and expressive, were completely blank. Dead. The irises had been replaced with glowing, tactical reticles.
"Aiko..." Kenjiro whispered, dropping his weapon entirely. He took a step forward, raising an empty hand. "It's me. Kenji. I'm here."
Aiko didn't blink. Her head tilted slightly, like a machine analyzing a foreign object.
"Target acquired," she said. Her voice was Aiko's, but stripped of all cadence, flat and synthesized. "Commencing execution."
She moved with terrifying, unnatural speed. Before Kenjiro could even raise his arms to defend himself, she crossed the distance between them. The mantis-blade on her right arm swung in a deadly arc.
Kenjiro barely managed to pivot, but the blade sheared straight through the thick armor of his left shoulder, slicing into his flesh. He cried out in pain, stumbling backward.
"Aiko, stop! It's me!" he pleaded, refusing to draw his sword.
She didn't hesitate. She spun, bringing her left blade up in an uppercut meant to decapitate him. Kenjiro threw himself to the floor, the blade sparking against the metal wall behind him.
A slow, rhythmic clapping echoed through the intercom system.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" Lord Ryu's voice slithered through the room, dripping with sadistic pleasure. "The resilience of the human form when you strip away the weakness of emotion. You always said she was the best of us, Kenjiro. I simply perfected her."
