Chapter 4
The Sadist's Ultimatum
❧
Kenjiro scrambled backward, dodging another blindingly fast strike from Aiko’s foot that dented the floor plating. He engaged his thrusters for a split second, sliding across the room to put distance between them. His shoulder was bleeding heavily, the suit's medical foam struggling to seal the wound.
"You monster," Kenjiro spat, his eyes locked on Aiko’s emotionless face. "What did you do to her?"
"I salvaged her," Ryu’s voice boomed from the hidden speakers. "When you abandoned her at Olympus, I sent a recovery team. She was broken, burned, clinging to a fraction of a heartbeat. I gave her a new body. And more importantly, I scrubbed her neural pathways. No more pain. No more grief. No more memories of a coward who left her to die."
Aiko lunged again. Kenjiro brought up his armored forearms to block. The impact was like getting hit by a mag-train. The mantis-blades cut deep into his gauntlets, sending sparks flying into his visor. He grunted, using all his enhanced strength to push her back, but he wouldn't strike her. He couldn't.
"Fight back, Kenjiro!" Ryu mocked. "Where is the great hero of Olympus? Draw your sword. Defend yourself. Or does the mighty ronin prefer to be slaughtered by the woman he killed?"
"Aiko, please," Kenjiro begged, dodging a sweeping slash that sparked across his chest plate. "Look at me. Remember Olympus. Remember the cherry blossoms we promised to see in Kyoto. Remember me!"
Her tactical eyes locked onto his visor. "Irrelevant data," she stated mechanically. She raised both blades, preparing for a lethal downward strike.
"A poignant display," Ryu interrupted, his voice suddenly losing its amusement, replaced by a cold, tactical edge. "But let us raise the stakes. You bore me, Kenjiro."
A large holographic screen flared to life on the wall behind Aiko. It displayed a live tactical feed. Kenjiro recognized the topography immediately. It was the asteroid. Specifically, Sector 4. The Neo-Edo slums. Millions of people, crammed into the neon-lit squalor.
A red targeting reticle slowly shrank over the center of the sector.
"The *Tengu* is currently charging its orbital kinetic-bombardment cannons," Ryu announced casually. "In exactly three minutes, I am going to erase Sector 4 from the map. Every man, woman, and child in that filthy slum will be atomized."
Kenjiro froze, Aiko’s blade stopping inches from his visor as she awaited new parameters from her master.
"Here is your choice, hero," Ryu purred, the sadism radiating through the audio feed. "You can die right now on Aiko’s blades, and watch your beloved city burn as your final sight. Or... you can kill my enforcer. If you kill her, if you slaughter the woman you love with your own hands, the launch sequence will abort. I want to see you break, Kenjiro. I want you to prove that you are just as monstrous, just as selfish, as I am."
"Ryu, don't do this," Kenjiro said, his voice cracking. "Target me. Leave them out of it."
"Two minutes and forty seconds," Ryu replied. "Executioner. Resume protocol."
Aiko attacked with renewed, savage efficiency.
Kenjiro was forced on the defensive, parrying her strikes with his armored wrists, taking glancing blows that tore his suit to shreds. Alarms blared continuously in his helmet. *Structural integrity compromised. Blood loss critical.*
He looked at Aiko’s face. There was no hesitation. No flicker of recognition. Ryu hadn't just erased her memories; he had hollowed out her soul and filled it with code. The Aiko he loved had died two years ago. This was just a weapon wearing her face.
But as he looked at her, he realized he couldn't do it. He couldn't kill her. Not again.
"One minute," Ryu sang over the comms. "Millions of lives, Kenjiro. What is the life of one broken machine compared to millions? Make the strike!"
